Misconceptions
There are many rumors and myths relating to taking oral contraceptives. Some were found to be true in early studies of oral contraceptives, but have been proven false in later clinical trials.
Weight Gain
There is a public perception that taking oral contraceptives can cause weight gain, but many clinicians have found this perception to be innacurate. An
article published in 2000 titled "Weight gain on the combined pill--is it real?" found that there is no link between oral contraceptives and weight gain.
Depression
It is also a common misconception that oral contraceptives can cause depression, or even make depression symptoms worse in women already experiencing it. However, major medical organizations such as the ACOG, the WHO, and United Kingdom's RCOG, all agree that oral contraceptives are unlikely to increase the risk of developing depression.
